    Abstract

The book analyses the emergence of the Esperanto speech community in the early 20th century. It does so from the perspective of 'ordinary' Esperanto speakers who helped build the language community primarily at a local and regional level. The case study is a Dundee based family and builds outward from Dundee and Scotland zooming into correspondence networks, the making of Esperanto speakers, the role of gender and women in the early language community as well we the translation of the New Testament into Esperanto.
