Abstract
Postpartum psychosis is one of the most severe mental health conditions after childbirth a woman can experience and one which usually requires rapid assessment and treatment, ideally in a psychiatric inpatient facility that allows for the joint admission of the mother with her baby. This chapter presents an overview of this condition, its prevalence, clinical features and classification, onset, etiology, and treatment options. The psychological impact of postpartum psychosis on the woman and her bond with her baby is outlined, alongside the overall prognosis. Furthermore, particular attention is paid to the psychological recovery from postpartum psychosis by drawing on women’s lived experiences.
