Abstract

This video shows Buddhist responses to COVID-19 at the Japanese Buddhist temple Banshōji in Nagoya, Japan. While reports on Banshōji's response to the novel coronavirus focused on remote practices and online outreach, head priest Daitō Gen'yū emphasized the signifance of leaving his temple open for visitors to practice meditation on site. Moreover, the popular prayer temple in downtown Nagoya experienced a significant increase in prayer rituals for divine protection during the pandemic.
