Abstract

The General Teaching Council for England (GTCE, 2009) has produced a revised Code of Conduct and Practice (CoCP) which sets out the professional expectations for all registered teachers. The code outlines eight principles that are said to reflect the core values of the teaching profession. This paper maps the differential professional expectations of one year Postgraduate Science, Technology (D&T) and Mathematics (STEM) trainee teachers’ from entry onto a training course until they are recommended for Qualified Teacher Status. Similarities and differences of STEM pre-service teachers’ characterisation of professionalism are reported in relation to the Code of Conduct and Practice for themselves and practicing teachers.
