    Abstract

In this paper, state space approach (SSA) is used for the determination of structural behaviour of simply supported orthotropic composite plates under uniformly transverse loading. The response results obtained by using SSA are then compared with the numerical results from finite element method (FEM). The effect of element types and mesh sizes on displacements and stresses are checked and described quantitatively. The neutral axis of the plate, identified according to the in-plane stress through the thickness direction, is shifted away from the middle plane.
