Abstract
The British Electricity Supply Industry (ESI) has a large medium voltage (11 kV) cable network, especially in urban areas such as London, Birmingham and Manchester. The bulk of 11 kV cables arc paper-type, XLPE being the modern choice of material but only making up a small percentage of the installed length. The paper cables that are in use may have been buried more than fifty years ago leading to an obvious concern about the remaining lifetime of these assets. This paper describes the research that will be carried out as part of a four year programme designed to investigate the problems associated with the detection, location and interpretation of on-line partial discharge information for use in the prediction of power cable failure. This paper also describes the results of the initial research and the future problems that are foreseen by the project team.
