Abstract

The paper describes the adaptation of a TOOLBOOK-based training resource to delivery via the World Wide Web (WWW). The original module was developed by the UK STEPS (Statistical Education through Problem Solving) consortium. The module focuses primarily on the use of variables control charts. It was thought that a WWW delivered version could be used as part of a distance learning system and would be easier to update. Control charts are a key element in statistical quality control. Recent studies, however, confirm the value of such charts is seriously in doubt in the hands of untrained or inexperienced users. Particular problems encountered, concern the use of inappropriate control limits and the general inability of operators to cope with non-random patterns in the data (Alwan & Roberts 1995).. Strategies recommended for remedying the situation include: (i) training users in direct visual analysis of run charts (without control limits) and (ii) (more ambitiously) supplementing standard quality control materials with corresponding materials on data analysis, regression modelling and time series analysis techniques - all to be covered in the context of a mainstream statistics package (Caulcutt 1995). Modem computer aided learning (CAL) technology offers an innovative alternative to both these options.
