PROVENANCE OF A GROUP OF MEXICAN OBSIDIAN ARTEFACTS IN THE BRITISH MUSEUM

Abstract

This paper is concerned with the geological provenance analysis of a group of obsidian objects now
in the British Museum. While originally acquired with the belief that they were all of Aztec origin, the probable
date of the objects is varied and the source of the obsidian has not previously been ascertained. By using portable
XRF apparatus and calibrating by measuring reference standards and samples from well-known Mesoamerican
sources, we were able to establish their origin as the Pachuca, Otumba, and Ucareo sources in modern Mexico.
