Abstract
This chapter sets out the notion of science as a relationship between 'research fiields' and 'research spaces' whereby the research organisations are the nexus linking these. Moreover, viewing science as a matrix relationship between research fields and research spaces is useful in dealing with five problems of the study of science dynamics. These are identified as the fragmentation of studies of science change; acute issues of attribution of change processes; developing frameworks for analytical comparison; explanation and charting change trajectories; and understanding the links between policy generated pressures for change and the transformations affecting research organisations, knowledge communities and ultimately bodies of knowledge.
