Quality control of packaged organic materials esp. food and drugs|comprises labelling tag incorporating sensors for gas or vapour, associated with decay or contamination, with opt. self-contained battery

    Research output: Patent

    Abstract

An indicator for showing the condition of a good item or other contaminable/perishable produce comprises a tag (11), designed to be attached to the container of the item. The tag incorporates one or more sensors (12,15) mfd. e.g. from semi-conducting polymers, which react to gas or vapour associated with decay or contamination, by undergoing electrical e.g. resistance property change. The indicator may include a visual display (14), e.g. liq. crystal and contain its own power supply (16). The sensor output may be incorporated in an electrical bridge circuit (13), or alternatively may lead to a connector for an external interrogating instrument.ADVANTAGE - Visual indicator for actual condition of food/produce, dependent on gaseous decay from bacteria such as salmonella or listerella, rather placing reliance on `sell-by' date.
