Abstract

Africa’s glacial history has been a longstanding focus of inquiry. Advances in cosmogenic nuclide surface-exposure dating have opened Africa’s glacial landscapes to direct chronological investigation. Application of the technique across the
continent reveals that in many areas glaciers reached their maximum extents of the last glacial cycle prior to the peak of the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), with evidence of further post-LGM fluctuations in multiple regions. Africa’s glacial history is just beginning to be revealed, and poses an especially rich target for future study into past climate and glaciation.
