Abstract

Quick Response (QR) is a type of Just-In-Time (JIT) manufacturing system specifically developed for the apparel industry to help firms respond to consumers' demands within a changing competitive environment. Four hundred New York state apparel manufacturers were surveyed for QR adoption using the self-administered mail survey method to test the following hypotheses: (H1): adopters and nonadopters of QR in the apparel manufacturing industry differ in selected firm characteristics; (H2): perceived benefits of QR implementation differ among small, medium-size, and large apparel manufacturing firms; and (H3): use of various QR systems differs among small, medium-size, and large apparel manufacturing firms. Our data indicated that firm size was significantly associated with QR adoption and the mix of QR systems adopted and was positively related to the perceived benefits of QR adoption. In addition, survey results indicated that small firms were least likely to perceive benefits from QR implementation.
