Abstract
This paper gives details of a new method for producing ceramic coatings at comparatively low temperatures. The technique involves evaporating a metal such as titanium, in a reactive gas, to produce titanium nitride. A repeated plane strain compression test was devised to assess wear resistance. Coatings have been produced with hardness over 2700 HV and provide considerable protection to bulk metal forming tools.
