    Abstract

Reading Place - Shaping Memory This paper explores how our responses to place influences our understanding of visual images located at different sites. The paper focuses on a case study of textile artworks situated in five English buildings: a church, a banking headquarters, a gallery and two museums. The influence of context on viewers’ perceptions of the artworks at these specific sites is examined, cross-referencing the communication intentions of the maker with audience interpretations of the artworks and the spaces. The readings of the artworks in relation to the function of the building and the locality in which it is situated are examined, exploring how memory and history inform our responses to visual narrative.
