Abstract
Desperate Wives has been one of the most popular programs in recent years, has generated an immediate fascination not only in the audience, but also in gender studies around the world. This study presents an analysis of the physical and socioeconomic characteristics of 42 characters, as well as an approach to the profile of the main characters. To do the above, the 23 episodes that make up the first season were analyzed. Although the results show a balance in the number of female and male characters, it is possible to observe a greater presence of Anglo-Saxon middle class characters. The women with leading and supporting roles were represented mostly with traditional female roles or as students, being the first presented with very thin physical complexions. The work concludes that the representations of men and women on television continue to show old paradigms and strengthen traditional ideas about occupations, physical complexion, and romantic and conflictive themes tackled from a stereotype of the feminine seen in fiction programs.
