    Abstract

This paper presents a theory of recording by a probe head onto an array of individual magnetic particles. The theory predicts the area packing density of particles and shows that head-to-medium spacing is the prime factor in determining its value. The paper investigates the trade between attainable packing densities and variations in medium properties.
