Abstract
Bio-based organic acids offer the opportunity to build a sustainable chemical economy through material and fuel manufacture by biomass valorization in the biorefinery context. In this regard, downstream processes are key to developing green production routes in line with the original purpose. Separation and purification of biomolecules are among the most energy-demanding processes and usually require petrochemical commodities. This chapter provides a critical overview of recent advances in green technologies for bio-based organic acids recovery, including extraction with neoteric solvents, membrane separation, and sorption processes, emerging as promising alternatives to promote bio-based industries.
