Abstract
Ex-prisoners routinely list the stigma they face from mainstream society and the criminal justice system as being a chief obstacle in the process of desistance from crime and this is strongly supported by criminological research on labeling theory. Surprisingly, therefore, relatively little research on offender rehabilitation focuses on strategies for reducing stigmatization and the processes of status degradation individuals experience in the criminal justice system. This chapter reviews some recent ideas regarding de-labeling strategies and some practices in this regard internationally.
