Abstract
From the 1920s on, Charles Atlas, the former '97-lb. weakling', offered his own story of personal transformation as testimony of his 'Dynamic Tension' bodybuilding system's value. Viewing Atlas's system in its historical context helps illuminate the disjuncture between an earlier body culture and our own. © 2000 Taylor & Francis Ltd.
