Retrofit distillation design using shortcut models for simulation and hydraulic analysis

    Abstract

    A short-cut approach for hydraulic analysis and evaluation of design options, which uses the results of short-cut column simulations, based on the Fenske-Underwood-Gilliland (FUG) method, is described. The FUG method provides information about the flow rates and compositions of the columns products, but not about composition profiles within the column. A boundary method is employed in order to calculate the composition profile within an existing column, together with an energy balance at the feed stage. The Fenske equation is used to estimate the distribution of the non-key components in the product streams.
