Abstract
Since its earliest glimmerings, Picasso's reception has been a solar system. Glaring from this literature is a 1930 text by the dissident surrealist Georges Bataille, which puts Picasso's practice on the side of an exorbitant, blinding, 'Rotten Sun'. In a close rereading (and retranslation), the present article folds 'Rotten Sun' together with Jacques Derrida's deconstruction of Platonism, and reinscribes Picasso in Bataille's
mythological anthropology of sovereignty.
