Abstract

Discusses the procedures that are followed when Bills introduced into the Westminster Parliament and Orders in Council are ready for Royal assent, including: (1) why Royal assent is required for new legislation; (2) how the Sovereign's assent may be expressed and communicated to Parliament; (3) the implications of a mistake being made in the Royal assent process; (4) what text constitutes the original or master copy of an Act; (5) how Royal assent may be given in the event of the Sovereign's absence or incapacity; (6) how it may be refused; and (7) how the process might be simplified.
