    Abstract

In one step, reaction of [([9]ane-S3)Ru(DMSO)Cl2] ([9]ane-S3 = 1,4,7-trithiacyclononane) with 4,4'-bipyridine (bpy) in MeNO2 solvent in an 8:12 stoichiometry over 4 wk resulted in self-assembly of octahedral metal 'corners' and 12 ligand 'edges' to form a supramol. cube (2). Reaction of [([9]ane-S3)Ru(DMSO)Cl2] with a large excess of bpy afforded [([9]ane-S3)Ru(bpy)3] (1). An x-ray crystal structure of 1 shows three bpy ligands oriented at mutual right angles, ideally suited as a corner for a supramol. cube. Solvolysis afforded [([9]ane-S3)Ru(bpy)(MeCN)2](PF6)2. Cyclic voltammetry of 1 and 2 are discussed. [on SciFinder(R)]
