    Abstract

Due to the large number of components in crude oil, making an appropriate choice of key components and their associated recoveries becomes a problem when applying the simplified models for the design and analysis of crude oil distillation columns. A novel methodology is proposed to automatically identify appropriate key components and recoveries given conventional product specifications. This new approach enables the use of simplified models to solve industrial relevant design problems. Case studies illustrating the application of the approach are presented. The results of simplified models were compared with those of more rigorous models. These simplified models can then be coupled with heat exchanger network models to allow the simultaneous optimization of the column and heat recovery system.
