Abstract

The digitalisation and applications of smart technologies in the construction industry are facilitating the uptake of new Smart Building approaches. Traditional development approaches for Smart Building construction projects are constrained by increasing complexities, especially in the design stage. Complex Product-Service Systems (CoPSS) as a systemic and interdisciplinary approach has the potential to address complex system design problems, as it facilitates stakeholder co-creation, business model innovations, and sustainability and responsibility, however, haven't been investigated in the Smart Building context. This paper suggests that Smart Building can be considered as CoPSS by clarifying links between them. An integrative literature review is carried out to investigate the elements of Smart Building from the lens of CoPSS complexity dimensions. and it proposes a conceptual framework to provide a new understanding of Smart Building. Moreover, this review outlines a critique of the current relevant literature and offers a research agenda to guide future research.
