Social assistance in developing countries: growth, innovations and challenges

Abstract

This article offers a global perspective on the growth of social assistance in developing countries. It examines the role of social assistance within social policy and discusses the factors explaining its recent growth in lo- and middle-income countries. It develops as classification of social assistance programmes and assesses trends in programme types over time. Distinguishing feature of programme design and innovation are studied in a comparative framework. The article ends by identifying key challenges ahead and assessing the future of social assistance in developing countries
