Abstract
A non-toxic, environmentally-friendly silane based hybrid sol gel system was developed for use as a pre-treatment or stand-alone coating for a variety of metal substrates. Comparison of the sol gel coating on Mg substrates was made with a commercial Cr-free pre-treatment. Immersion and EIS tests results showed the SG system to have significantly improved performance in terms of corrosion resistance. In addition, accelerated corrosion test comparison of the SG system on an Al substrate with that of chromic acid anodizing showed the SG system to have improved performance over the Cr(IV) based treatment. Hot dip Zn-based coatings were also found to be suitable substrates for the application of hybrid SG system showing comparable performance with conventional chromate treated surfaces.
