    Abstract

A new type of glassy membrane-forming polymer, which behaves as a microporous material with a high apparent surface area, as a consequence of its rigid and contorted molecular structure was described. The insoluble microporous polymer networks of high surface area which composed of planar functional units fused together by rigid spirocyclic linkers were reported. The porosity of polymer of intrinsic microporosity (PIM-1) in powder and membrane form was demonstrated by nitrogen adsorption/desorption. A solvent-cast film was tested for the pervaporative removal of phenol from aqueous solution in order to demonstrate the potential of PIM-1 as a material suitable for separation membranes.
