Abstract
The California Older Person's Pleasant Events Schedule (COPPES) measures frequency and enjoyment of pleasurable events. Interviews were conducted with 220 people older than 60 years. Acceptable to excellent internal consistency indices were found for the COPPES global scales and their subscales. Good concurrent and criterion validity indices were also found. Women reported a higher frequency of pleasant activities than did men (total score and domains contemplating and doing), and more women experienced enjoyment in the domain doing. Enjoyment was found to be significantly associated with reduced depressive symptomatology in women. Rumination was significantly associated with lower frequency and enjoyment scores in women. Frequency scores on the relaxing and contemplating domains are associated respectively with lower depressive symptomatology and higher social support for men.
