    Abstract

The special senses permit the CNS to maintain equilibrium with the environment. Surgery disturbs this environment, and the anaesthetist needs to have basic information regarding these senses to protect the patient. Common receptor physiology, vision, audition, the vestibular system, taste, smell, and the interpretation of senses are discussed.
