Abstract
The electrochemical and optical behaviour of four viologens was investigated by means of cyclic staircase voltammetry and pulse polarography at platinum and Nesa optically transparent electrodes and by visible spectrophotometry. It was found that ageing of films of the viologen caused the electrochemical and optical properties of the films to undergo substantial changes. A method is presented of separating the effects of ageing from other effects such as dissolution of the viologen, allowing the time-scale for the ageing process to be determined. © 1983.
