Abstract

Smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) is used to simulate floating bodies in the surf zone. The open-source code SPHysics is used with a Riemann solver for improved wave propagation characteristics. Results are presented for (i) a floating box in the surf zone under the forcing action of periodic waves, and (ii) a comparison with experiments for the movement of a caisson breakwater. The numerical results show realistic behaviour for the floating box. For the caisson breakwater, good agreement with experimental data is obtained for the displacement, but the computed horizontal forces appear noisy. © 2009 World Scientific Publishing Co. Pte. Ltd.
