    Abstract

This paper presents an investigation on the use of shear thickening fluid (STF) to improve stabbing resistance of 3D multi-layered woven ballistic panels while retaining its high ballistic performance. Rheological properties of STF are studied and impregnated into 3D multi-layered woven Twaron® panels. STF is a Non-Newtonian fluid which transforms from liquid state to solid-like state when it encounters mechanical shear stresses. In comparison to the neat fabrics, the stabbing resistance of STF impregnated woven Twaron® panels exhibited significant enhancement (about 100%), and the ballistic performance of the panels has witnessed notable increase too. The enhancing effect of STF was systematically discussed and the improvement mechanism was analysed. The research results indicate that STF addition leads to the increase in inter-yarn friction and reduction in mobility of filaments due to shear thickening phenomenon of STF.
