Study and time projection of cold-day events in Thessaloniki

Abstract

n attempt is made to study the cold-day events in Thessaloniki. To meet this objective, the biometeorological index SSI΄ is used for the time period 1960-2003. The data used are hourly values of air temperature and relative humidity, obtained at the Meteorological Station of the Department of Meteorology and Climatology of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. The biometeorological index SSI΄ is calculated as a function of the observed hourly values of air temperature and relative humidity and it is expressed in an hourly and average daily values. The mean yearly distribution of the SSI΄ for period 1960-2003 is obtained through the analysis procedure. Statistical expression of it is used as a criterion for the identification of the cold-day events in Thessaloniki. The frequencies distributions of the cold-day events are calculated and distributed in a seasonal, yearly, cold and warm period, sense. The results are compared to the ones obtained from the data analyses of the future period of 2020-2035, in a monthly and annual sense. The future period (2020 to 2035) data information are derived through the second generation Canadian model of general circulation of atmosphere CGCModel 2, incorporating the emissions scenarios of IPCC, SRES A2 and SRES B2.
