    Abstract

The method of images is used to calculate refractive indices of model Langmuir-Blodgett films on a dielectric substrate. The molecules are treated as five point submolecules. Increasing the permittivity significantly increases the refractive index normal to the substrate, but hardly affects that parallel to the substrate. The effect is greater the higher the polarizability adjacent to the substrate.
