Abstract

The mineralogy, mineral chemistry and geological occurrence of metal sulfides, the major sources of world supplies of many metals, are reviewed. Emphasis is placed on the major sulfide minerals pyrite, pyrrhotite, mackinawite, galena, sphalerite and chalcopyrite, and the sulfarsenide mineral arsenopyrite. Coverage includes discussion of crystal structures, compositional limits, physical properties, and of phase relations including applications in geothermometry and geobarometry. Aspects of the low temperature geochemistry, isotope geochemistry, and surface chemistry are also discussed, and the geological occurrence of sulfide minerals is reviewed.
