    Abstract

This report reviews the literature on household energy consumption and energy-related practices from a socio-technical systems perspective. It presents relevant approaches and recent thinking from the various disciplines, including psychology, sociology of practice and science and technology studies to understand how people use electricity services and electrical appliances in their home. The purpose of this review is to map out concepts and theories, which will inform the research objectives, data collection methods and analytical framework to be employed to explore consumer engagement with and adoption of active demand (AD), and assess the impact active demand management technologies can have on end-user perceptions and practices of electricity provision and use.
