Abstract

Sleep disturbances can be classified as issues initiating or maintaining sleep or waking after sleep onset, affecting up to 20% of the UK population. It is usually treated with pharmacological interventions such as sleeping pills (eg Temazepam) or psychological interventions such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). Although pharmacological interventions are usually more effective, there are issues involving drug resistance/tolerance, toxicity with higher doses and addiction. This study will address the question if complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), such as the use of lavender oil (aromatherapy) can be a similarly effective but a safer option for treating sleep disturbances.
