Abstract

Mood, aspect and tense are the grammatical categories which are projected by conjugation. Although there are various studies on the aspects of these categories in Turkish, these studies deal with these categories with a descriptive approach. Such studies display inconsistencies with respect to mood-aspect-tense categories, and linguistic expressions of these categories in Turkish. In addition to this, there is no extensive research in the literature which deals with the mood-aspect-tense categories placement in Turkish. In our study, we assume that the adverb(ial)s play a role in the positioning of these categories in conjugation. By this way, we aimed to determine and prove the positions of mood-aspect-tense markers in Turkish with the adverbs having functional head features. We assume that the positions of mood-aspect-tense are coordinated with adverb(ial)s. Thus, we propose a hierarchy in which the inconsistencies will be resolved in mood-aspect-time categories handled in the literature. To this end, we discussed adverb(ial)s and presented their structures in Turkish with their various aspects from a crosslinguistic perspective. Then, we went on to elaborate mood-aspect-time categories and provided crosslinguistic examples. With the present studies in the literature, we presented the aspects of mood-aspect-tense categories in Turkish and their realizations. Then, we examined the adverb(ial)s with functional head features whose positional properties correspond to that of mood-aspect-tense categories. In line with our research questions, we found out that the positional properties of the adverbs that are functional heads in the other languages presented in our study conflicted with the positional features of the adverb(ial)s in Turkish and we remodeled the hierarchy of the adverb(ial)s as functional heads. With the adverb(ial)s that are functional heads, we determined mood-aspect-tense categories, and their realizations and the positions of them in the conjugational process. In addition, in our study, we also discussed the adverbial clauses, their positional properties and the positions in which they have these features.
