Abstract

This guide has been prepared specifically for the PDP11 computer in Management Sciences at UMIST. It is designed to introduce elements of the BASIC language to trainee programmers. (For more comprehensive information, see the systems manual with Pat Dudman.) Chapters 1 to 5 contain sufficient information for users to write most programs they need. Chapters 6, 7 and 8 provide further information which will make programs more efficient and widen the range of programs that can be tackled. Chapter 9 is intended for those who have some grasp of matrix manipulation and should be omitted by the reader who knows nothing of the subject. Chapters 10 and 11 describe additional facilities, in particular those concerned with presentation of results and the linking of programs. Finally, chapter 12 summarises the elements of BASIC for quick reference once the reader has grasped the general principles. Exercises are set from Chapter 3 onwards with sample solutions in the Appendix (p71).
