The case for a foundational materialism: Going beyond historical materialist IPE in order to strengthen it

Abstract

There is no abstract, but this is a representative paragraph (from the introduction):

'It should be made clear that I find Bieler and Morton’s approach largely convincing. However, in order to strengthen further historical materialist IPE we need to look beyond the discipline. Below, I refer to a range of authors who are clearly relevant to, but at a distance from, IPE in order to make two key points. One, the importance of the body is a philosophical wager of some significance; and two, the argument that ideas are material social processes can be made only via a prior acknowledgement of this wager. As such, the basis for the strengthening of historical materialist IPE is what I term a foundational materialism, and despite the negative connotations one often associates with notions of foundationalism, this is entirely consistent with an open, reflexive approach to research (cf. Jackson 2010: 41). The implications for critical IPE are discussed in the conclusion.'
