Abstract
A major review of the status and validity of Standard Observer Colorimetry was started by the CIE Division 1 in 1992 (Princeton 1992), and subjected to intensive discussion at the ’93 Symposium on Advanced Colorimetry, reported in full in (CIE 93).
The discussions were prompted by a growing body of evidence, that CIE Standard Observer Colorimetry does not correctly predict the colour-identities of certain metameric pairs of light energy distributions. In effect the prediction of a colour match differs, on occasion strongly, with visual observation. The structure of the CIE System is reviewed in this context.
