    Abstract

    This paper introduces a novel industrial scale approach, developed through by academics and industrial collaboration applicable to the thermal treatment arising as a result of reactor decommissioning. Supported by Innovate UK to investigate decommissioning options for the UK reactor fleet and could result in a cost saving of > £4B.Engagement with UK regulators has indicated this is an improvement on the baseline strategy. This work has been presented to the UK NDA, regulators and theIAEA International Decommissioning Network, it is the process of securing follow-onfunding for pilot-scale implementation and is applicable to 100 reactors worldwide reducing a footprint of 300’000T of nuclear waste.
