The Corsican Sound: Identity, Evolution and Transformation

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingConference contribution

Abstract

In this paper I explore the part polyphony has come to play in questions of cultural identity in Corsica, outlining the ways in which the polyphonic tradition and concept has evolved in recent years, particularly with the development of a new and vibrant performance culture and the concomitant migration of polyphonic repertoires from the realm of popular expression to that of artistic product. I address questions of musical change, examining the impact of professionalisation and commercialisation both on the music itself and on the transmission of material. I include brief reference to projects concerned with the reconstruction of polyphonic masses and to the types of new compositions produced by the numerous semi-professional groups active on the island. I also comment on the way in which the concept of polyphony has been redefined against the backdrop of an ongoing negotiation between tradition and contemporaneity.
