The dehydrogenation of cyclohexane on Pt(100): the role of surface structure in determining the reaction pathway

    Abstract

    Cyclohexane, adsorbed at low temperature on the reconstructed (hex) phase surface of Pt100, shows a softened C-H mode and dehydrogenates to benzene on warming, in the same way as on the Pt111 surface. On the (1×1), or "truncated bulk", surface of Pt100, however, the spectrum of the chemisorbed layer is more complex, there is no softened mode and dehydrogenation to benzene does not take place. Instead, there is conversion to an as yet unidentified hydrocarbon species, characterised by a single, sharp band at 2948 cm-1. © 1990.
