    Abstract

This paper studies the relationships between the lateral stiffness, internal forces and bracing patterns of a four-bay and four-storey braced frame. All possible 331776 bracing arrangements of the simple frame are analysed, and the twelve best and twelve worst braced frames are examined. All possible 256 symmetrically braced frames among the 331776 cases are studied in detail. The results demonstrate that the X bracing leads to the stiffest frame. The measures for arranging bracing members are suggested for achieving a stiffer braced frame. Some of the findings are applicable to more complicated frame structures. © Civil-Comp Press, 2011.
