Abstract

A monograph based on my PhD thesis, considering French behaviours under occupation in the département of the Nord during the First World War. The book considers the occupied population's understandings of and reactions to the German presence through the notion of an occupied culture, a framework that established what were considered acceptable and unacceptable behaviours. In particular, the work examines notions of collaboration (what I call 'misconduct'), disunity, criminality, resistance, and the memory of the occupation.
