Abstract
Reviews the book, The Glorious Art of Peace by John Gittings (2012). This is a wonderful study of the subtler “arts of peace” and a welcome relief from the somewhat crass valorization-through-pragmatism of the usual power-, war-, and violence-based contributions to human political history. Detailed and well-written chapters cover several dimensions of peace: perceptions, history, morality, humanism, peace consciousness, alternatives, and modern developments. This volume’s richness, breadth, and incisiveness are no doubt assisted by the fact that its author is also a senior member of the editorial board of the Oxford International Encyclopedia of Peace.
