The ideologies and practices of internationalisation in universities

An essential driver of English for Academic Purposes (EAP) provisions is the rising global focus on internationalisation of higher education. Relevant to EAP, English is frequently considered a ‘symbol’ of internationalisation, due to its rising use and status as an assumed lingua franca in international settings. Within this context, the first goal of this chapter is to synthesise the various meanings and approaches towards internationalisation, both in terms of theoretical conceptualisations and practice in EAP settings. At the same time, it is recognised that these approaches towards internationalisation (and the role of English within that approach) are rooted in ideologies, particularly around what it means to be international and the assumed role of cultural and linguistic diversity within internationalised higher education spaces. For example, there are rising debates around the relationship between internationalisation and ‘Westernisation’, along with the assumed roles of international students in internationalisation discourses. This can be characterised, for example, by assumptions made about students’ diverse needs by dividing student services between ‘home’ and ‘international’ students. As such, the second goal of this chapter is to critically examine some of these assumed ideologies that underlie perspectives towards internationalisation inthe context of EAP.
