Abstract

Most research to date has analyzed the impact of mission statements from an organizational perspective. This research investigates mission statement perception and impact from an individual perspective. Based on insights derived from the sensemaking literature, we examine the antecedents and impact of management of mission statement meaning (MMSM) by organ-izational members. Data from 1783 employees of three hospitals and one public organization indicates that (a) the level of MMSM is positively related with the degree of strategic supportive attitude and perceived person-organization fit, and (b) perceived colleague pressure and perceived behavioral control are significant determinants of the degree of MMSM.
